When Can I Get Breast Surgery Done?

Breast surgery is one of the most common medical procedures around today. For the most part, a large cross-section of women in a variety of situations can be considered for breast surgery. But there are a few medical and even legal ramifications to take into account when considering breast surgery. In regards to the government, there are a few federal regulations that everyone needs to be aware of. Even though a minor can go in for other forms of plastic surgery, that minor cannot have breast surgery unless it is a reconstructive procedure. The optimal age limit for surgery varies, although it is generally done following the development of the mammary glands.

Why Must the Procedure be Done After Puberty?

This is recommended so that the development of the breasts is complete and not interfered with by the surgery. Another possibility is that the breasts may also grow and change shape during that time and it is possible that the procedure could be avoided altogether. Many young adults are also not mature enough mentally to make a sound decision regarding the procedure that will affect them the rest of their lives.

Can I Have this Surgery if I Am Over 50 Years Old?

There is no age limit to breast surgery, or any cosmetic surgery for that matter. If you are healthy and have the desire, then you are a good candidate. Breast surgery with silicone or saline implants is one of the most requested cosmetic surgery procedures today. It is quite normal for women in their late 40s and early 50s to have breast surgery, and this actually makes good sense because this is the time when women often have fewer family obligations and are more able to begin focusing on their own bodies.

Does the Choice of Implant Affect the Age Requirements?

Yes, you must be at least 18 years of age to have saline implants, and at least 22 for silicone implants. There is no age limit; one is as old as one feels. There are many senior citizens who take care of their bodies and minds that would potentially benefit from breast surgery. Be sure to consult a physician to confirm that you are healthy enough for this procedure.

How Did the Regulation in 2006 Affect Age Restrictions?

This regulation stated that no person under the age of 22 was allowed the option of silicone-filled breast implants, so basically a person who is going in for breast surgery and is between the ages of 18 and 22 is only allowed the saline solution-filled breast implants. Once a patient has reached the age of 22, it is important to look into any potential risks that may result from breast surgery, especially since some could affect their health in a negative way. This is why the federal government has disallowed persons under the age of 18 from undergoing breast surgery.
